Hi David,
A lot will depend on the type of radio you have. If you only have an FM
radio your options are only to go and try working the packet
satellites. If you have an all mode dual band radio, you can try your hand
at AO-7 and FO-29 and AO-40 if you add a dish and downconverter. My own
"evolution" was FM handhelds (UO-14 and SO-50) which after 2 months led me
to buy an Icom 910H all mode (UO-14 and SO-50 pluse AO-7 and FO-29) which
after 3 months led me to add the K5GNA BBQ dish and downconverter (adding
AO-40.) To be honest I should have gone right to AO-40 - it has turned out
to be as easy as working UO-14 - possibly easier.
