FT-847 need packet help

I'm trying to get my FT-847 to run basic 1200 bps packet (2 meter FM). I'm
using an MFJ 1270B (TNC2) for TNC. Tonight I checked the lines with my
oscilloscope. Coming from the FT-847 I can see about 0.5 v peak to peak
signal on pin 5 of the PKT connector (that pin is labeled Data Out-
1200bps). When I plug into the TNC, however, the signal drops to nil. If I
connect my cable to the transceiver speaker jack and turn the volume down so
it's at the same signal level, the signal stay up when it's plugged into the
TNC and I copy almost perfectly...of course I'm listening to APRS traffic so
it looks like gibberish ;-) JUST KIDDING !!

Does this sound familiar to anyone else? I suppose I could just connect to
the speaker, but that's kind of dumb with the PKT port just sitting there.
Haven't tried transmitting packets yet.

I've got the menu set at 1200 bps, and the mode to FM. Are there jumpers or
anything inside that need special setting? I could try adding an external
amplifier stage, I suppose. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
