RE: FT-847 Failure- need Suggestions

That was the solution. A+ for diagnosis, Gopal. The fix took about 30
minutes. I paralleled the contacts, as you suggested, and that solved it
for now. Eventually I'll face the problem again when the second set of
contacts goes. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. 73, Brian W3BW

Brian,

Most likely the switch has died. I had a similar problem with the power
switch which is identical to the MOX switch and changed both. You can get at
them by loosening the front panes screws and flipping over the front panel.

Yaesu now have a mod for that introducing a resistance to quench the in-rush
currents which are burning the contacts.

The switches are actually double pole, but Yaesu have only used one set of
contacts and you should parallel them when you renew them. You may be able
to just parallel the contacts now and get the rig going on the second set of
unused contacts

Good Luck,

Subject: [amsat-bb] FT-847 Failure- need Suggestions

Hi all: I was operating AO-40 tonight, for about 90 minutes. Near the end
of the session, my FT-847 started showing a strange symptom. From
time-to-time, when I keyed up the rig in SSB (Satellite Duplex)(using the
MOX button), the thing just powered down. At first, I thought I was
accidentally hitting the power button instead of the MOX button, but that
was not the case. This happened 5 or 6 times. I checked the power supply
voltage, and it seemed normal. I cycled the power supply, allowed it to
cool, and so on. After awhile, the 847 refused to power up at all.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as to where to begin troubleshooting.
Tnx.
