Yeah, early on, i simulated a quasi-polar mount and found that for decent
squint, it's pretty close.  Then WB4APR net-published his portable dish
which used a similar mount.  (I replicated the dish and built my own mount
out of lumber rather than copper pipe, as i'm not good as soldering large
objects.)  And i think you do want the max-el (always due-south) rather 
than aiming for the pole star.  This changes seasonally, so alas, one will
probably not want to put this on a roof (that is, unless the roof is easy
to get to).  

This mount also works well with an 'armstrong' rotor (e.g. turning it by
hand); just adjust for the best signal by ear, like one often does in mode
J-FM.  73's/good luck!
