Frank,
As a relatively recent returnee to the fold, I was personally
disturbed by the tone of the recent amsat-bb exchanges.
Thanks for your message to the officers and board, pointing
out the destructiveness of the recent LEO,HEO,ISS, Planning,
debates.
A certain amount of discord is to be found in any community.
It seems increasingly common of late for differences of interest
or opinion on amateur use-groups to devolve into destructive,
ad-hominem debate. Not sure why that is, exactly, but I
see it. On some boards, the moderator reminds them to
knock it off...and on some, the other users have become quick
to take offenders to the woodshed.
I often wonder if amateur radio has more than its fair share
of adolescents of whatever age. Perhaps it's only that we
have ready access to bandwidth, without much filtering.
That final 'enter' key is just too handy.
For sure, we write without the final editorial step of writing;
applying judgement to what we've written. Is it right?
Is it persuasive? Will it have the intended effect?
Is it spelled correctly?
And to that, I would add two criteria: Is it hurtful to
someone else? Will it advance the common good?
I was going to send my answer as a personal reply, but I
think it may be beneficially posted at -BB, as well.
Thanks for reading. Support ECHO launch~!
