I agree that full Doppler tuning is sometimes problematic because of drifting downconverters and because most others don't use it.

Good Doppler tuning software does NOT "fight" you.  It immediately suspends Doppler tuning when it detects that you are tuning manually, and automatically resumes Doppler tuning when you stop tuning manually.  SatPC32, InstantTune, and W6IHG Radio Tuner do not "fight" you if your radio's CAT interface allows the software to read the VFO frequencies.  Doppler tuning software will "fight" you if your radio's CAT interface doesn't allow the software to read the VFO frequencies (FT-736R and early FT-847 production runs, for example).
