Re: Intolerance-MISINFORMATION!

No matter how hard we try there seems to be a complete blockage when it comes to
the notion of long term versus short term satellite operation! I have never
faulted those that enjoy LEO operation but I do fault those that insist on broad
brush approximations and less than accurate assumptions regarding satellites!
When a newbee creates a station capable ONLY of LEO operation and expects
an HT with an Arrow antenna to be considered a long term solution is totally
false. Publishing such information is a disservice indeed. To expend funds in
a azimuth only rotator and a radio capable of only FM with or without APRS
capability is an end into itself. That newbee has no long term goal to expand
and no ability to enjoy EAGLE or any microwave capability. Few can argue
effectively that microwaves are not our future. We have lost both two meters
and 435 MHz in most countries and 2401 MHz due to our broadband neighbors.
Most know the difference between operators and operators with good technical
ability. The AMSAT program has been more than generous accommodating those with
good ideas lacking skills involving Physics. We simply can not continue ignoring
just a few db between linear and circular polarization, pointing accuracy or the
difference between watts available to well funded satellites. Tens of milliwatts
is the goal in the future birds. Much more than an order of magnitude benefit is
obtained by improving the Earth station rather than the costly satellite, with
the added ability to contact others terrestrially AND no license upgrade.
The AMSAT membership should understand Bob and I have contributed heavily
to the satellite program in different ways. We continue to differ in "how much
and where, long term vs short term, how much technical ability is enough." Your
duty is to help decide which is the better solution clearly indicating your goal.
