This past Field Day, my son made the mistake of tuning the radio to the 
weak-signal portion of the band, and calling "CQ". The attenuator 
popped, my '847 went into high swr fold-back, and my K5GNA d/c 
survived.
He was embaressed, I was relieved, and the d/c still works.
