Jeff,
I am one of the NJ Co-ordinators. If you haven't heard of me, then you
haven't been to any local hamfests. I personally do NOT have tons of
money to give away. I do have some time. I lend myself out to hamfests
for AMSAT and sell the trinkets etc. I bring in a modest amount but my
yearly total adds up to a generous donation from a talk at a ham club or
hamfest proceeds. Yes, we do need more "tangible" things for Hams to
touch and feel so they can buy. I always get the comments as on the
amsat bb about expensive this and that and how AMSAT doesn't want to fly
the modes that they already spent money to use. I prove differently
about the cost to operate AO-40.
The comments I saw today on the bb reflector have all hit home. We must
listen to the general membership with money coming from them as a
catalyst to get us to respond more with their wishes. Everyone I speak
with has a story and most point to putting up a mode they have
familiarity with (B? V/U?). 2 user sats are not the answer to everything.
I was very surprised to see the survey of hams on AO-40 relative to
country. This indicates to me that it's use is not accepted as well as,
say AO-13 was. Goodness knows how easy it is to receive AO-40,
however, using 2.4 ghz scares people. It is magic to most.
My ramblings could go on but I just wish we had a magic item to gather
moneys with. Yes, I don't agree all the time with the board (Kings of
AMSAT), but like you, I feel obligated to help in the way I can. Choose
wisely with BOD nominations. I choose those that use their "ears" the
most.!?!

Dee Interdonato, NB2F
