Which raises another query. With the relatively poor performance down
converters (like the Drakes etc) you can improve performance with a preamp,
modifying the front end etc. However, how good/bad is the LO in these units?
I think it's PLL based - so how does it rate in terms of phase noise, other
outputs etc? Being originally in a fairly undemanding role, you might expect
that the answer is "not well", and therefore that ultimate performance is
constrained by these factors.

Any ideas?
