RE: equipment in sts-09
Thanks for a most interesting and informative post, Tom. Sure beats 90% of
the crap that's been on the BB the past few days.

The radio used by W5LFL (and by Tony England, W0ORE) was a battery powered
Motorola MX-300 HT used with an external headset and cassette tape recorder.
The antenna was a window mounted, cavity-backed DDRR (directional
Discontinuity Ring Radiator). Some additional details (including .WAV file
of Owen calling CQ and a copy of the W4LFL QSL card) are archived at
http://home.datacomm.ch/hb9rvw/hamradio/w5lfl/w5lfl.html.
Photos of Owen operating the HT from STS-09 can be seen at that website and
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2000/ast21aug_1.htm
http://users.skynet.be/on1cau/sarex_act.htm
That last site includes a RealAudio clip of the famous W5LFL-JY1 QSO.
73, Tom
