Dear William,
any geiger counter will trigger on any ionizing particle.. Alphas and
Betas you can shield. Gammas you want to count, but bear in mind about
the solar wind and cosmic particles like high energy protons. Protons
with a typical energy of 60 MeV will pass any light shielding like
nothing.. however, I don't have any numbers as these are also dependant
on orbit height. Better check

This is a particle detection satellite and you will find some estimates
about (for them: Background) particle flux..
