NIX the idea of 28.120:
Based on the initial round of excellent replies and comments from Peter
and others, I have reached one conclusion...
That is, that although crystaling the UPLINK 3 KHz band to listen to the
existing PSk-31 10m operations on 28.120 does have some good points, it
has a fundamental flaw in concept. That is that the assumption on this
satellite transponder design and concept of operations was that the uplink
band would have a published recommended ERP uplink power and all stations
would be asked to operate only at that uplink power for equal passband
sharing.
Such a recommendation is incomatible with an uplink on an existing slice
of spectrum with existing users. So I retract the idea of using 28.120
which is the existing PSK-31 segment.
Now what still remains on the table is my desire to find a frequency in
the 28.1 to 28.3 USA Novice-Tech+ segment for the uplink so that the
transponder is usable by the larger number of operators (at least in the
USA anyway). And a secondary issue is that I want to be close enough to
the 28.120 segment so that users of QRP class Xtal controlled PSK-31
transceivers can easily QSY to the uplink freq without having to buy new
crystals.
This leans towards Peter's suggestion of 28.117 to 28.120. Does anyone
know if the QRP 10m PSK-31 kits can rubber their operating frequency down
that low without having to re-tune circuits? Having a large group of
identical 5 W ERP uplink stations all on the uplink at the same time has
great appeal to the original objectives of this project...
What are the current users of that segment of the band?
