I had the same problem. I work AO-27 using my FT-817, a set of earphones, an Arrow antenna in one hand, the mike in the other hand and a little old laptop which I use to log the QSOs with one finger from the hand holding the mike. I control the radio from the mike. It's not as sophisticated as Wayne's solution but it's quite efective when you are used to it.
