Tony,
Uh - well, yes. What you're 'supporting' is possible. But, in reality -
I think you'd find that simply becoming involved with your local scout
troop, your kid's classes - sponsoring/mentoring an amateur radio club
at an elementary school - these kinds of things, will bring many more
new hams into the hobby than the occasional 'network geek' who's dinking
around with wireless LANs.
Most of the dorks doing wireless LAN hacking see amateur radio as a
desiccated dinosaur impeding their own progress and opportunities, what
with it's rules and limitations - not a viable route for further
development. Oh, the occasional ham or online ham resource may offer
some useful info - but it's simply a step towards their own goals - not
a goal in itself. It may as well be spray painted on some wall as being
part of the amateur radio hobby.
In order to attract these 'young minds' ya gotta give them something
new, something that hasn't been done to death for the past 5 years. Like
APRS, FM sats, SSB, CW, HF, PSK31, etc, etc, etc... Why do you think
they're exploring the RF aspect at all? For the radio knowledge?
Poppycock - it's for the challenge of cracking another system, doing
something that hasn't been done to death by every other script kiddie
out there. It's just the current fad, the current 'in'.
How many warchalkers you think are also Linux users?
And since no one is listening, I'd have to assume you're not hearing
this either.
