If you have an FT-847, adjust the "USB TX carrier point" extended menu to the maximum positive setting (+300 Hz). This will significantly reduce the bass in your transmitted signal. The result is more of your transmit power will go to the higher frequencies where consonant sounds are articulated. You can hear the effect of this adjustment on your voice by cranking up the monitor volume and listening to yourself on headphones while transmitting in simplex mode.
An update:
After thinking about this, I don't think you can hear the effect of the "USB TX carrier point" using the monitor circuit. You have to listen to your transmitted signal with a separate receiver.
