AO-40 Newbie Observations

Greetings to all,

I've noticed a recent thread relative to LEILA. On Saturday 10-20-02, I
had my first opportunity to have a listen for AO-40 on my new ground
station. I was glued to the receiver at the moment of AOS. Parameters
from DN81kq were: Range: 61753 Km. Squint: 26.1 degrees, Elevation .5
degrees, Time: 0000 UTC. All of these numbers from InstantTrack. The
very FIRST signal I was able to detect was LEILA! I was able to hear the
MB shortly thereafter (elevation was .840 degrees at the point in time,
0003 UTC) and once I got several degrees of elevation the MB was solid.
On the other hand, LEILA continued to appear at several places in the
band pass with signal strength nearly equal to the MB. I could not
detect one single other signal on the bird, either SSB or CW.

Since the subject line tells all I don't know if this first observation
is of any significance or not. It is just my 2 cents worth. I will
continue to test and evaluate my new station and wait impatiently for the
squint to get better.
