Okay, what about interference on the antenna elements themselves?  I guess 
I never considered that HTs would have diplexers built in, but without the 
diplexer, I can't hear myself on the downlink with many of them.

So, I'm left with the theory that you have to keep the 144 MHz signal off 
of the 435 MHz antenna.  After all, a yagi's performance is based on 
constructive and destructive interference, right?

No, I didn't build the diplexer.  I bought the board, bought the parts, 
and before I could put it together, I got to Mr. Lowe's booth at Dayton, 
and decided that I'd spring for his prebuilt one so I could play with my 
homebuilt arrow at the campground.
