G-5500 repair advice please
Thanks to some excellent advice from list users on how to debug my G-5500
elevation unit, all indications suggest a problem inside, most likely the
pot (all wires tested good to the rotator, etc.).
I ordered the replacement pot from Yaesu (ouch! $30 or so), and have the
elevation unit in the shack, opened up and ready for the repair.
Couple of quick questions to those who have successfully ;-) replaced the
elevation resistor pot:
1) Any hints on how to pull off the replacement with few problems? The
only "clever" thing I could dream up was to use some modeling clay to hold
the gears in place during the exchange of the pot. I'm worried about
losing "index" on the gear and pot position.
2) what type of lube is suggested for the gears? Seems like a prudent
thing to do while I have it split open. There is a bit of rust on the
bearings already (unit is only a bit over 1 year old), and there is some
corrosion on other metal parts inside. A bit troublesome to me...(I live
in NC, so not much winter here).
3) any other tricks you can share for longer life/preventative maintanence?
Thanks in advance,
Mark L. Hammond [N8MH]
