I've noticed that the mode B transponder is a little flakey sometimes.  One 
day we were getting ready for a round table, 4 or 5 stations were in there 
and then all of the sudden everyone was gone, but the beacon was still 
going strong.  Throughout the pass sometimes you could get a signal through 
and sometimes you couldn't. Most of the time couldn't, and the beacon 
popped up in the passband.
