Re: AO-07: wouldn't it be cool...

Perry,

The salient difference is that AO-7 beacons on 435, 145, and 29 are
spontaneously being activated...if they required ground command to be
activiated, it would be illegal for Amsat to bring up the 432 translator
now. If the 2304.1 beacon is on then that would be great to finally hear
it, but if it requires a ground command, then it will never happen...it was
not allowed back at the original launch and nothing has changed in the
international treaties regarding Amateur Radio satellite operation (it is
out of the treaty band: 2400-2402 MHz). I believe Amsat would be liable
for any action to activate it without a waver (Int'l attorneys may comment
if they wish). Though it would cool to hear it, AO-40 and UO-11 both
provide 2400 beacons so AO-7/2304.1/b is really redundant, now.

Howard, Graham,

I will post an inquiry on the sbms reflector to see if anyone recalls the
command structure for the 2304.1 beacon. Several members have 2304
capability so they may be able to look for it. My guess is that it
requires a coded command and will not spontaneously come up.
