APRS in Japan

APRS in Japan,

The casual observer of the ISS and PCsat downlinks will notice that there
is lots of APRS style activity in the USA, Europe, and Australia/New
Zealand. But notably absent is the big HAM radio country of Japan. See
the live downlink pages:

   ISS: http://www.ariss.net
   PCsat: http://pcsat.aprs.org

We are finally beginning to see some activity to bring Japan into the
worldwide 1200 baud UI digipeating AX.25 packet system via these two
satellites and to also join in the worldwide APRS linked communications
and tracking system. There is now an active APRS internet gateway JA1YKX
operating in Yokohama and also feeding PCsat dowlinks into the APRS

To see a world map of APRS acitivy go to this page:

And when the USA map comes up showing all stations on the air, then ZOOM
out several times to see the rest of the world activity. This map is not
very good because it does not show the world outlines, but anyone can set
up a live APRS web page. See how on Steve Dimse's

The reason that JAPAN is not on APRS is because they developed a system
ham radio system called NAVITRA for GPS position reporting but since it
did not do all the other things like Messsages and Email, and Telemetry,
and WEB pages that APRS does, it did not catch on... But now that APRS is
global, maybe it is time to abandon NAVITRA and integrate them into the
rest of the worldwide system...

Just a thought...
