Re: 435 MHz AO40 uplink

Wayne,

I used the bird for a while this morning and signals were quite good. I was
running about 15 to 25 w to a CP-30 (M2) 14 dBc antenna and had to watch for
leila. Squint was about 10 to 13 deg while I was chatting.

I did notice AGC loading several times. I also noticed power sharing
problems that seemed to be the result of Mode L uplink stations. (I've seen
this many times before)

I also notice that several of the L band uplink stations seem to not give a
whit about how much of the downlink power they "corner". There seem to be a
bunch of them that run excessive uplink ERP...they are MUCH stronger than
the 70cm uplinked stations and don't seem to have to worry about Leila. As a
result, I think the sharing of the downlink passband degrades badly as these
people "marvel" at their S7 to S8 signals, when everyone else is running S5.
(With an S2 noise level)

Observing this, I'm very grateful that we have Leila on U band, and that
there aren't a lot more mode L uplink stations than we already have. Mode L
seems to be largely ripe for abuse, and short of complaining directly to the
stations (who should know better), there is no real control on them like
there is with Leila for the rest of us. I wonder if Leila will ever be
turned on for Mode L uplink?

I saw this mode L phenomenon yesterday and today. BIG, BIG signals from a
few people on Mode L, very average signals or poorer for 70cm uplink, when
these people were yammering away admiring their prowess.
