Re: elmer award
QSL cards are not needed but the intent is to work actual school club stations.
having a demo at a school is great and hopefully it will entice school
administration to get licensed and set up a station. but it was really intended
to have the schools participate as well. the students themselves do not need to
be licensed when operating a club station but the club station needs to be
registered to the school.
as in the case of olle middle school down the street from me. they have a
call, k5oms. there is a ham radio class each semester and some kids do wind up
getting a license at the end of the semester. but others are in it for the
elective. as long as they are operating as k5oms, it is the trustees
responsibility that they operate correctly. frosty, k5lbu, is the trustee and
the teacher.
this is different from the clear lake arc, k5hou, going into a school to give a
demo and having the kids operate. this would not count as it is not the schools
club callsign but rather a ham clubs call.
there are actually a lot of universities that have club callsigns (they would
count as well). there are a lot of them out there, getting them on the air
might be a different story. remember emory-riddle university in florida. there
were 3 or 4 students there about a year ago that were on the air almost every
day as they went after worked all states and vucc. they were operating with
their personal calls which would have only counted for a personal contact,
however, you probably could have got them to give you a qso with the school
club call.
