Re: No Ao40 signals :-(

William,

I suspect the problem may be that you are listening at times with very poor
squint angles. The squint can have a much greater effect on the received
signal strength than the range in some cases. As an example, on one pass
last summer I followed the satellite from around 4000 km out to 60000 km.
At 4000km with an almost 180 degree squint the signal was barely peaking out
of the noise. At 60000 km with the squint below 5 degrees the MB was
solidly 8 S-units above the noise.

I suggest checking into the AMSAT Chat room while you are trying to receive
AO40. You will find a very helpful group there most of the time (when
they're not asleep at the keyboard or otherwise away) and can compare signal
reports, doppler shifts, antenna headings and tracking program outputs to
help you trouble shoot your system. The AMSAT chat room is on the
duck.informx.com server, port 6667. Once connected join the #amsat channel.

Good luck.
