Mike,

A TNC is not required to decode the beacon, only a Windows PC with sound
card and the AO40rcv program available free from 

http://www.qsl.net/ae4jy/ao40rcv.htm 

While construction of a cable to the sound card's line in jack is nice, I
have seen the program work on a lap top with a built in microphone parked
on top of the receiver speaker!
