RE: 10 turn pots
Since I am only using AO40 I only need 180 of az and 90 of el. But these
pots turn a full 360 degrees and do not have stops at the ends. So they can
be rotated in one direction indefinitely. I am sure there is a "dead spot"
but I think it is very small. Hope this helps.

Is there something I don't get here? Most single-turn pots only
rotate through 270 degrees, I think. That seems to mean you'd need
some gearing for 360 degrees rotation anyway. And if you're using it
for elevation, using only 90 degrees loses some resolution (although
it may not be significant). So it looks to me as if gearing a
ten-turn pot for azimuth would be desireable, assuming you can get the
backlash low enough.

Rather than building a gear ration why not get a 1 turn pot. I am using
these with good results that you can see on my web site. I bought some
from
Allied Electronics but have since found a source that looks good at
http://www.candhsales.com. They are $3.50 each and part number POT9902.
They
also have some other interesting parts.

Does anyone know of a way of constructing a 1:10 turns ratio gearing
system
to use in turning a 10 turn potentiometer? I am building a positioning
system fof my rotators and need something smaller than the 20 inch pully
system that the local hardware store suggested!
