I have both the TNC-NB96 and an MFJ 1278B + G3RUH9600 modem. (the 1278 is an
upgraded 1270 I believe).
I only ever use the TNC-NB96. The MFJ works but doesn't seem as good on the
downlink, and I also found it more fiddly to set up when regularly switching
between 1200 and 9600.
I have also modded the NB96 to allow for 38400 as well as 1200 and 9600,

The MFJ CPU won't handle 38400 downlinks.
