Re: how to best power a mast mounted down conv

I could not agree more with John comments. In addition, our
theoretical/optimal approach as "a must" just discourages others from trying
and joining the fun.
As an example, in the past I have seen people not willing to give a try to
sats because after reading the literature they thought that would not have a
chance if not
having circularly polarized antennas that could be swithched RHCP/LHCP, with
fiberglass booms, and similar things...my recommendation is been always give
it a try with whatever comes handy and forget about the theoretical
requirements.
This is not against theory or Wayne's comments. Starting "quick and dirty"
is great source of fun and learning if from there you you walk the path of
improvement towards the theoretical optimal, then you will really understand
what it works and what doesn't and what the theory is worth in practical
terms and this is knowledge (IMHO, the theory is just information). The best
way to understand why you need a dish for AO-40 is to do some cheap quick and
dirty helixes :-) and make some QSOs with them.
