I just spread some metal window screening (from the local hardware
store) over the grill and used some hookup wire to fasten the screen
to the grill.  I started from the center and worked outwards to keep
it smooth.  If you tug a little at the corners the screen will
stretch and cup a little, and conform to the shape of the grill
perfectly.  Look closely at http://www.jps.net/gregd/DSC00056.JPG
and you should be able to see the wires.  (Other pictures of what

I figure the screen and helical feed did help some, but it wasn't
a "wow" fix.
