  I second what Hans said.  I was able to recieve AO-40 with
a dipole to a dental filling last night...  :^)

  The bird was seriously STRONG, and more importantly,
uplink performance was much better, (and telemetry
showed far less AGC suppression on the reciever).

My theory is that a lot of the "marginal"  recieve (no preamp)
stations aren't cranking up the power to hear themselves.
