Why don't your IT guys send and receive files via modem using the landline
phone network? It's not packet, but the connection is reliable. BBS users
did that for years before everybody switched to the internet.
The newest wireless phone (cellular) networks provide high speed packet data
capability. GSM GPRS networks provide about 56 kbps packet data. CDMA
IS-95B offers 56 kbps, but it's not deployed anywhere in North America
because the network operators are holding out for CDMA 1X which offers 256
kbps. A few places should have CDMA 1X deployed by the end of the year. I
doubt the cellular networks offer "group" data connections, though. They
probably only allow direct one-to-one connections. Unfortunately, North
America is far behind Europe and Asia in deploying packet data on cellular
networks.
