I have seen those "external receive antenna" mods described on a couple of web sites. As far as I could tell they permanently wire the FT-847 to use a separate receive antenna. Is that correct? Or do they provide some means to easily switch the receiver back to the "main" TX/RX antenna? Most FT-847 owners don't want to permanently disable 144 MHz transceive capability.
