Paint it with marine grade paint even if you gel coat it. The gel coat
lasts about 3-5 years without paint. After that it(the gel lcoat)
degrades slowly, as it would on a boat. Since the boom is not usually
too easy to wash and wax (hi hi) it will degrade a bit faster than on a
boat which is maintained from time to time. I do recommend the gel coat.
A small pint can goes a long way and it can be tinted bluish gray( or
any other color) to blend in with the sky or whatever.
