I think most of us started out using the beacon as our test signal. It is on
thru the entire orbit now and is more powerful than any station who might be
on (at least it should be...). Once your pointing is correct and you know
the correct downlink translation (I found my second Drake was off by 10kHz!)
the rest is just testing your results. I did find the DEMI WSS for 2401
enabled me to test at any time, even when the satellite was not in view.
That helped when it was time for a sanity check...
