Doug,

The receive bandwidth directly affects S/N. If you reduce the bandwidth from
lets say 6 KHz to 3 KHz and the signal still fits inside the filter, you
reduce the noise by 3 dB. You make the noise smaller and still keep the same
signal level so the S/N has to go up.
