Will we have to bring them home?



The growing junkyard in orbit around our planet seems to be attracting more
attention. Note this article:

One particularly interesting comment:

* Therefore, the March meeting of the International Committee on Space
Contamination adopted a resolution on the necessity to bring order to the
near-earth-space. The space flight standards for all countries should
include a requirement for the space devices developers to ensure the objects
return from the orbit. *

The cost associated with adding a means for de-orbiting a satellite will be
high and that will probably cause such a requirement to be ignored until
some sort of catastrophic (or near miss) event occurs that forces the point.
Even so, it seems that in the coming years the amateur satellite community
may well have to consider this requirement when developing new spacecraft.
