Re: AO-40: 14dB AGC on Uplink...



14db looks like about the average in my 663 blocks of tlm copied this
morning.  Very few blocks were below 10db and toward the end of the pass the
average was closer to 18db.  Several blocks had AGC values above 20db with
the highest being 33.9db at 1159 UTC.

I suspect the culprit was that everyone was trying to match the middle
beacon signal level which is actually at +10db. From the AO40 Tlm spec. at
http://www.amsat-dl.org/p3d/tlmspec.txt

"The Beacons' relative powers are GB 0db, EB +4db, MB +10db."

The few times the AGC dropped below 10db I could find my signal quite
readily using 10w into a 12 element yagi.  If the AGC had been near zero I'm
sure I could have easily made SSB QSOs.

Hopefully education and courtesy will prevail.
