What the Rules don't allow for is qso's via repeater, which is the same
as a digipeater.   When you digi through a digi-node, you are not
actually communicating directly (with rf) to the other station. Both
stations are communicating only to the digi.   There is NO rf
communications part between the stations.  

You might get on ten meters and while hitting a repeater in New England,
have a relayed qso with Germany.  But, your rf has only gone to and from
New England, not to and from Germany. 

Finally, you can pick up the telephone and call a ham friend in Italy.
It is NOT an rf qso, and would not count for ARRL awards.
