They're updated immediately. You don't need to quit. You don't need to save
anything either.
I usually only use the 2 line keps from the Amsat web site, copying and
pasting them into a KEPS.DAT file. Then I do a Disk Update. I've found the
FTP update to be quite unreliable.

change take hold, or are they updated when I update the file from the Kep
