Re: Uk help needed!

Bob,

I made my own boom from a wooden "closet rod." I wound it over with
fiberglass 4" wide cloth from the marine supply. I used marine resin and
then finished with a gray tinted gel-coat. Wind two(or more) layers in
opposite
directions, overlapping turns about an inch. This forms a nice lightweight
composite structure that resists the crushing effect of the clamps. The
clamps also bite into the boom and they never slip. It is more rigid
than PVC or wood, but not as stiff as 0.125 wall aluminum tube. After
six years in Florida it has small checks in the gel coat but is still very
sound.
A spritz of epoxy paint would restore it to new... maybe when I tune up
The V/U yagis.

Some of the guys put wooden dowel rod inside of PVC. You need to
find the right size PVC and wooden dowel. I wasn't all that satisfied
with the result but it does work. It has to be TIGHT to get the best effect.

Hope this helps,
Vince Risalvato
