Um, "H.323-compliant vs. NetMeeting" isn't the same thing as "Linux vs.
Windows", although some of the same issues are there...as long as one is talking
about *issues*, as opposed to "I bought a computer at K-mart and this came with
it so lets all use it."

That's the last time I will use the L-word or the W-word in this post.

I would hope communications protocols for satellite use would be on-topic here.
H.323 is at least a standard, and if a given implementation doesn't currently
include multicasting support, which we *certainly* shall need, (unless you think
things like DX Packetcluster makes efficient use of bandwidth; if you do,
monitor traffic on a 'cluster sometime) we will need to look at implementations
that make adding what we need feasable. NetMeeting is a pretty decent testbed
for point-to-point; I use it myself for that at work sometimes. But it doesn't
do multicast.

Multicasting is not yet at all common on the public terrestrial Internet. That's
no reason at all for us not to use it if we need it. If it's difficult to add to
a closed-source product, we should be looking at stuff that *is* easier to
modify and enhance, and port to the OS platform of your choice. Whether it's
MacOS or Palm.
