Re: TranSystem MMDS converter for AO-40

Ward,
Very good. Your measurements are consistant with K5GNA's. He has hundreds of these puppies. I was over at Bob's house the other day and picked one up to test out, as well as several of the wire-frame dishes he has. I was especially interested in the 24"x19" model, as it looks like a good candidate for 5 & 10 GHz with some aluminum screen added. I also needed more gain for the local HATS ATV repeater (which is harder to hear/see than AO-40!). I have been picking that up with my Drake, but the signal is usually only P4.

I went out this morning at 1850 utc to try and pick up AO-40, but could not find the beacon. I am sorry I could not report a more positive assesment. I don't know whether it was the hardware or some kind of cockpit error. I suspect the latter because I could not find it with my Drake and helix either :-)

<< I did some measurements on a TranSystem AIDC-3733 MMDS converter that I
recently bought through an eBay auction (more may still be available). This
converter is similar in function to the Drake 2880. Measurements of an
unmodified TranSystem converter and a fully modified Drake are on my website

The unmodified TranSystem converter performance was impressive. I will
convert this one for a 145 MHz IF, but early indications are that it will
give excellent performance with no other modifications than changing the
crystal and tweaking frequency.

Some measurements are:

125 MHz IF/ 2401 MHz RF - 36.7 dB gain, 1.2 dB noise figure

145 MHz IF/ 2421 MHz RF - 36.8 dB gain, 1.3 dB noise figure

More measurement results and a photo of it are at my web site.
