On the other hand, a satellite with a receiver, a transmitter, and
a DSP in between is very flexible. It could be a packet satellite,
a linear transponder, an FM repeater, etc.

This might lead to more of those FM repeaters than non-software-programmable
satellites.

Pardon me Jon but you seem to be weary of anything digital.
