One reason I can think of has to do with the interaction between the 2
meter and 70 cm elements.
Configured as a +, the 70cm and 2meter elements belonging to the antenna
next to it would be parallel with each other.
In an X configuration, the 70cm and 2meter elements belonging to the
antenna next to it are on different planes.
This may cause more 2meter transmit to 70cm receive desensing.
Just an idea.
