I remember 3 years ago when I moved back to Houston from San Francisco (had all my gear in boxes for 4 years), I had just read an article in QST about how easy it was to work AO-27. So... I bought a new dual band FM mobile rig (FT-5100, my first 2 m rig in more than a decade), set it up on the dining room floor with a mag mount antenna next to it and left it set on 436.800 MHz--waiting for the satellite downlink to open the squelch. You know, I never heard that squelch open all weekend :-)
