Perhaps because 220 MHz is not a "Ham
Band" in the rest of the world. This is
much like the 70 MHz band in the UK, or
the 620 MHz band in New Zealand (nice
for ATV). If you want gear for those
bands you have to build it youself... or
modify something.

On the other hand, you're most certainly
correct went you suggest that commercial
interests might be "eyeing" those
bands.Here in the Netherlands we've had
to learn to share part of the already
small 70cm (430 - 440 MHz), and a few
years ago NZ hams also lost a fair chunk
of their 70cm allocation.
