Bill,

Sounds like your crystal came in an HC-45/U holder (3.75mm lead spacing,
8mm tall).  This explains why you had to "phenoberate" the leads a bit
to fit the holes in the board.  Doesn't really matter; obviously it
works, and that's the main thing.
