RE: ISS Packet

The OSCAR Satellite Report dated February 1, 2001 had a lengthy article
written by Frank Bauer, KA3HDO regarding ISS amateur radio operations.
Several key points of the article:

1. Shep seems interested in making school contacts and not much else. Time
commitments..etc..
2. When he energized the system for routine packet operations, the TNC
apparently came up with all settings at default. Most likely cause is a dead
RAM backup battery.
3. RAM backup battery also died in one of the training TNCs.
4. ARISS support is considering developing a procedure to restore the
settings in orbit, or swap the current unit with a flight spare.
5. Both of the next two flight crews have been trained in packet operations.

Frank says he hopes to have the system operational ASAP.

Steve Diggs, W4EPI

I think I heard somewhere, that there may have been a hardware or parameters
problem with the TNC.
