Hello Don,
I have an IC-706MKIIG and you are partly right, while it DOES NOT do
"full-duplex" on the satellites, it can be used to work the "easy" FM
low-earth-orbit (LEO) sats. You will be at a bit of a disadvantage in that
you WILL NOT be able to hear yourself getting into the sat and therefore you
will be operating "in-the-blind". This makes it more difficult, but not
impossible to work the "birds". There are a number of folks who have made
contact this way. I don't usually use mine this way though I have with some
success.
I have a Yaesu FT-847 in the shack at home which is designed to work
"full-duplex" on the birds and this is really the better way to go. I don't
know of any small rigs like the 706 that run full duplex yet, but it sure
would be great if we could talk one or more of the manufacturers into
building one.
Maybe we will get the chance to chat on one of the birds some day soon.
Until then, 73'
